26th International Airline Symposium

IAS Grounded during COVID but Takes Flight Online.

The International Airline Symposium (IAS) is a annual conference that brings together airline leaders and experts from around the world to discuss industry trends, challenges, and best practices, focusing on innovation, operations, AI, customer experience, and strategy in a "never normal" world. The event provides a key forum for airlines, technology providers, and other organizations to share insights and ideas across the wide range of industry topics, such as revenue optimization and operational resilience to digital transformation in aviation.

This invitation-only event, sponsored each year by several of the major national and international airlines, features executive presentations from companies such as United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, China Airlines, Vietnam Airlines, SalesForce, United Parcel Service, and many others.

THE CHALLENGE

By 2021, COVID had delivered a catastrophic blow to the aviation industry. Domestic air travel in the United States had declined over 55% with international travel plummeting by nearly 80% worldwide. New aircraft deliveries were immediately mothballed while thousands of airliners were parked in the desert, unused. Tens of thousands of airline employees were furloughed as flights everywhere were canceled en-mass and many airlines survived only because of state-sponsored bailouts.

Completely cancelled in 2020, the International Airline Symposium was staring at being grounded for a second straight year. Given the state of the industry, it was never more imperative for this symposium to occur, so conference organizers reached out to GlobeStream Media to help get the event off the ground and bring the gathering online.

WHY GLOBESTREAM MEDIA?

Since the early 2000's key personally on the GlobeStream Media have been involved in live streaming content around the world. With the company's expertise in networking, live streaming, and platform integration, it was an obvious fit from the get go that GlobeStream ha the right experience to get the job done. Additionally, as an all-in-one solution provider, GlobeStream Media was also able to provide design services to create all of the on-air graphics for the event.

THE SOLUTION

One of the biggest challenges facing the event was its international nature, and the variety of IT limitations participants would have. After much research, two platforms were settled on: Skype and Zoom. This was great since both platforms were widely know and used at the time, but there was a catch... irrespective of which platform someone was using, they needed to be able to contribute to the conversation going on.

With this in mind, GlobeStream Media crafted an intricate technical solution that allowed Zoom and Skype meetings to, in essence, become one virtual meeting, allowing participants on either platform to be able to be a part of the conversation.

THE RESULTS

The 26th International Airline Symposium started the year hitting turbulence, but with GlobeStream Media working the technology behind the scenes, they were able to find smooth air in the age of COVID and land a successful online event.
